Edward Hopper's "Room in New York"

Notice the woman, playing a singular note on the piano. It looks as if she has been sitting there for some time, just pecking away. Meanwhile, the man in the room is reading a newspaper. He looks as if he has just gotten home from work, and ready to unwind after a hard day.

They both seem detached. The woman's shoulders are turned slightly way from her point of interest (the piano). Her knees and legs are pointing towards the man. The man is completely entrenched in his paper. His knees, shoulders, and head are all facing the same direction. She seems to be interested in the piano, but only superficially. Her body language gives her away.

I like how the point of view is coming from the outside. Notice the column to the left, and the smooth stone outlining the window. Great Painting

What is the difference between..

What is the difference between an Oboe player, and an onion?
Nobody cries when you slice up an Oboe player.
